From the French management to today′s tavern
The Osteria 1396 in Pontevecchio, practically a stone′s throw away from the Grand Canal just across the bridge, at number 3 in Vicolo Valle, has in fact been around since 1396.
Before the canal even existed, it was indeed an inn in a strategic location, along the road which led through the countryside of the Ticino valley (which today leads to the "La Fagiana" Park Centre) at that point connecting Lombardy to Piedmont.
In very ancient times, the inn was even called "The King′s Court" and was managed for a long time by a French family. In our times, however, as an "Osteria" (with a black rooster painted on the facade, a symbol that distinguishes it and perhaps tells us about that prolonged management by the cousins from across the Alps), it offers traditional dishes that revive the tastes and smells of the past.
